2013-2014 Madison Square Garden College Basketball Schedule


New York, NY (November 8, 2013) - The return of the NCAA Tournament highlights an exceptionally packed 2013-2014 college basketball schedule at the completely transformed "Mecca of Basketball,” Madison Square Garden. In addition to featuring 10 of the Associated Press’ top 25 pre-season teams, The Garden schedule will include the nation’s most renowned tournaments, including the 2K Sports Classic, National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and Big East Tournament, as well as a Super Bowl weekend doubleheader, Jimmy V Classic, BlackRock Gotham Classic, Duke vs. UCLA in the CARQUEST Auto Parts Classic, and the St. John’s University Red Storm, who will continue to call The Garden its home away from home. Advance Auto Parts has signed a new, multi-year marketing partnership, making the brand the “Presenting Partner of College Hoops” at Madison Square Garden.

For the first time in 53 years, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament will return to New York City and Madison Square Garden. On March 28 & 30, The Garden will host the 2014 NCAA East Regional (Sweet 16 and Elite 8) marking the first time the NCAA Tournament will take place in the current Garden building, which opened in 1968 and just completed a three-year, $1 billion top-to-bottom Transformation.

A host to 71 tournament games between 1943 and 1961, the 2014 NCAA East Regional will mark the 17th time the NCAA Tournament will be hosted by The Garden. The connection between the two began when Wyoming beat Georgetown in 1943 for the NCAA Championship. Over the course of its 134 year history, The Garden has hosted eight first-round appearances (1951 & 1955-1961), nine Regional’s (1943-1951) and seven Championships (1943–1950), including City College of New York’s double Championships in 1950, when they beat Bradley for the NCAA Championship just a week after winning the NIT Tournament, also against Bradley, at Madison Square Garden.

As the “Presenting Partner of College Hoops” at The Garden, Advance Auto Parts will receive brand exposure inside the Arena during a select lineup of premier college basketball tournaments and games. The company will serve as the Presenting Partner of the Holiday Festival and Maggie Dixon Classic as well as have branding at the NIT, Jimmy V Classic, 2K Sports Classic, BlackRock Gotham Classic, Super Saturday Doubleheader and all St. John’s games. In addition, Advance Auto Parts will have the opportunity to engage fans with on-court and digital promotions.

Additionally, a number of industry leading companies will partner with MSG Sports for the 2013-14 season of College Basketball at Madison Square Garden. Coca-Cola, Coloredge, Cushman & Wakefield, Delta Air Lines, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Kia and Reese’s will all receive promotion via MSG's unique array of assets, including digital courtside signage, branding on the new multimedia display, GardenVision, promotions, and experiential benefits.

The 2K Sports Classic Benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project will tip-off the season with two nationally televised matchups. On November 21, the University of Connecticut will renew its rivalry with Boston College as the two New England schools face off for the first time since 2005. The game will be followed by Indiana University vs. the University of Washington. All four teams will return November 22 for the consolation and championship games.

The NIT Season Tip-Off is set for November 27 and 29. The 16-team field includes regional hosts: Duke, Arizona, Alabama and Rutgers. Additional teams include: Canisius, East Carolina, Elon, Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgia State, McNeese State, Metro State, Norfolk State, UNC Asheville, Rhode Island and Stillman College.

Steve Lavin and the Red Storm will return to the completely transformed Garden in the annual Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival presented by Advance Auto Parts on Saturday, December 7. The Holiday Festival is the longest-running in-season college basketball event and will feature local favorites St. John’s and Fordham University in the marquee game with LaSalle University taking on Stony Brook University in game one.

On Tuesday, December 17, the Jimmy V Classic presented by Corona returns to Madison Square Garden for the 11th consecutive season with stellar matchups. The University of Pittsburgh takes on the University of Cincinnati in the opener, followed by University of Florida against the University of Memphis in game two. The early-season event will conclude the seventh annual Jimmy V Week, a weeklong initiative to help raise funds for cancer research.

The CARQUEST Auto Parts Classic features two of college basketball’s most storied programs, the Duke Blue Devils and the UCLA Bruins. The December 19 matchup will be the first meeting between the two teams in more than a decade.

Men's college basketball powers University of Notre Dame and The Ohio State University underline the field of the second annual BlackRock Gotham Classic along with Bryant University and the University of Delaware. Notre Dame and Ohio State last met in December of 2008.

The annual Maggie Dixon Classic presented by Advance Auto Parts on Sunday, December 22 features some of the top women’s basketball programs when Texas A&M squares off against St. John’s, followed by the University of California taking on Geno Auriemma and the defending national champion UConn Huskies.

New York City will be abuzz when the Super Bowl comes to town next year and to get the festivities started, Madison Square Garden will host a Super Saturday Doubleheader on February 1 when St. John’s takes on Marquette in a Big East matchup to be followed by Georgetown University vs. Michigan State University. The Red Storm will have six additional Big East matchups against Villanova, Creighton, Georgetown, Butler, Xavier and DePaul as well as a feature game against former Big East rival, Syracuse on December 15.

In its 30th consecutive season, the BIG EAST Championship returns to The Garden Wednesday, March 12 through Saturday, March 15.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament will return to New York City on March 28 & 30 when The Garden will host the 2014 NCAA East Regional (Sweet 16 and Elite 8).

The 77th Annual National Invitation Tournament is back to close the 2013-14 Madison Square Garden College Hoops schedule with the oldest running post-season tournament championship on April 1 & 3.
