Basketball Court Refurbishments and Knicks Player and Alumni Appearances
New York, NY (November 30, 2012) - The New York Knickerbockers, Chase and City of New York Parks & Recreation announced today the launch of Basketball in the Boroughs presented by Chase, a new community initiative that will serve thousands of youth within the five boroughs of New York City. The program will run from December to April with one borough being featured each month, beginning with Queens, followed by Staten Island, Brooklyn, Bronx and Manhattan.
As part of this exciting new community initiative, the Knicks and Chase will host a variety of events and activities to celebrate each borough during its month. Appearances at select Chase branches will offer fans the opportunity to meet current and former Knicks players and win exclusive Knicks prizes and tickets. The Parks Department will select local children to participate in a free basketball clinic at a location in each borough. The Knicks and Chase will fund the refurbishment of a Parks Department basketball court in each of the five boroughs, refurbishments will begin now and continue into the spring. The activities will culminate each month with a borough Theme Night at Madison Square Garden during a Knicks game.
"The Knicks have a longstanding commitment to providing the youth of New York with a variety of opportunities through camps, clinics and other events to have fun, be active and learn the game of basketball," said Howard Jacobs, executive vice president of marketing and sales, MSG Sports. "Chase and the Parks Department have been incredible partners and supporters of our community programs over the years, and we are proud to collaborate with them once again to present Basketball in the Boroughs."
"We are thrilled to partner with the Knicks and the City of New York to launch Basketball in the Boroughs," said Colleen Canny, Senior Vice President and Northeast Region Manager for Chase. "It's a creative way to inspire these young fans right in their own neighborhoods – only reinforcing our commitment to the communities we serve throughout New York City."
Queens will be the featured borough for the month of December. On Monday, Dec. 3 a Chase Branch visit is scheduled at the Queens Blvd and 46th Street location, Knicks Alumni and Basketball & Business Operations Representative Larry Johnson and members of the Knicks City Dancers will be on hand to meet and greet fans from 12pm-2pm.
