New York, NY (November 18, 2011) - MSG Network will debut its new program "Knicks Greatest Rivalries" on Sunday, November 20 at 8:00 p.m. The 25-part series looks back at the epic battles of the early 1990s between the Knicks and their biggest adversaries, including the Chicago Bulls and the Indiana Pacers.
Episode One revisits Game 3 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Bulls at Chicago Stadium. Featured in the episode are former Knicks Derek Harper and Anthony Mason, who played a significant role on that Knicks team, as they walk host Spero Dedes through the highlights of the game. With the Knicks up 2-0 in the series, the game was physical from the start, and emotions bubbled over in the second quarter when Harper took down the Bulls' Jo Jo English, which led to Harper's ejection and suspension from Game 4, and started one of the more memorable bench-clearing brawls in NBA history.
"(English) said something that led me to believe he was going to hit me and where I come from, you try to get the first punch in," said Harper. "It's not something I'm proud of, but when you are in the heat of the moment things happen. It's unfortunate because you feel like you're letting your guys down. I was more valuable to my teammates on the floor than in the locker room."
"It was surprising that it went that far, for Derek, but if you're going to do that, you've got to take him down perfectly and I think he executed it. I gave him a 10," Mason joked about the scuffle.
Down 19 points in the second half, the Knicks made a torrent comeback in the fourth quarter led by Patrick Ewing, who scored 10 consecutive points, including a game-tying bucket with 1.8 seconds left on the game clock. On the next possession, however, with Scottie Pippen on the bench, Tony Kukoc ended the game with a jump shot off the inbound.
"We always try to lock people down and get in their face if they get a shot," said Mason, who was guarding Kukoc when he hit the game-winner. "He is a taller player and he got it off. I don't think there is anything I could have done other then run through him."
Upcoming episodes in the series will include some of the most famous games in Knicks history, including: Game 1 of the 1992 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals when the Knicks upset the champion Bulls in Chicago, Game 2 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals against the Bulls featuring "The Dunk" by John Starks at MSG, Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against the Pacers featuring the Reggie Miller and Spike Lee confrontation, and Michael Jordan's "Double Nickel" game in 1995.
